Adopting a dog from out of state

Transport, training first, and what to prepare.

You do not have to live in Florida to adopt from Renegade Rex K9 Ranch. Adopters have come from across the country, some driving to Port St. Lucie to meet their dog, others arranging transport. The process is the same: apply, talk with Mike, then go home. The adopter pays transport. If you are investing in travel, we recommend having the dog trained first so it arrives knowing the rules.

How it goes

  1. ApplySame form as everyone. Say where you live and how you plan to get the dog home.
  2. Talk with MikeA phone call about your home and the dog you have in mind.
  3. Train firstOptional, recommended. A few weeks with a partner trainer while you prepare.
  4. TravelDrive down and meet the dog, or arrange transport. We help with either.
  5. Go homeGive the dog two weeks to settle before you judge anything.

Out of state questions

Can I adopt if I live outside Florida?

Yes. Adopters have traveled to the ranch from across the country, and dogs can be shipped when needed.

Who pays for transport?

The adopter. We help arrange it and talk through the options and costs on your call.

Can I meet the dog first?

Yes, at the ranch in Port St. Lucie. Many adopters visit, meet the dog and drive home together.

Should the dog be trained before it travels?

We recommend it. If you are spending on travel, a few weeks with a partner trainer means the dog arrives knowing the rules.

What paperwork does a dog need to cross state lines?

A current rabies vaccine and a health certificate from a vet. Airlines usually want the certificate issued within 10 days of the flight, and state rules vary, so your vet or transporter will confirm what your route needs.
