Before you adopt

Is a Belgian Malinois right for you?

A plain checklist from people who rescue them.

A Belgian Malinois is the right fit if you have trained high drive dogs before, can give the dog one to two hours of exercise and mental work every day, and stay consistent for years. It is usually the wrong fit if you want a calm companion, work long hours away from home or have never owned a working breed. A Malinois is not a harder German Shepherd. It is a different level of intensity. Use the checklist below and be honest with yourself. A good match is better for you and for the dog.

What a Malinois needs every day

Exercise

Real exercise, not a stroll. Running, fetch, a flirt pole or structured play. Plan on one to two hours, more for a young dog.

Mental work

Obedience, scent games, learning new tricks, puzzle feeders. A tired body with a bored mind still finds trouble.

Structure

Clear rules, the same every day, from everyone in the house. A Malinois notices every gap in your routine.

The checklist

Tick what is true for you today. If you cannot tick most of these, a Malinois is likely not the right dog right now.

Likely a good fit

  • You enjoy training and want a working partner
  • You are active and outdoors most days
  • You have handled strong, driven dogs
  • You are patient with setbacks

Probably not a fit

  • You want a calm dog to sit beside you all day
  • You are away from home for long hours
  • This would be your first dog
  • You hope a trainer will fix it for you

The first year

Expect testing. A young Malinois chews, mouths, spins and tries every rule once. A rescued adult may arrive with gaps in training and a history you learn slowly. Give any new dog time to settle before you judge it, and start training in the first week. The first year is the hardest. For the right person it is also very rewarding.

Common questions

Are Malinois good family dogs?

Some are, in the right home. A Malinois is intense, fast and strong, and can be too much for small children, so supervision matters. A calm adult with a known history is a safer fit for a family than a young, high energy dog.

Can a Malinois live in an apartment?

It is rarely ideal. A Malinois can live in a smaller home if it gets hours of exercise and mental work outside every day. Without that, boredom shows up as chewing, barking and destruction.

How much exercise does a Malinois need?

Plan on one to two hours of exercise and mental work every day, and more for a young dog. A walk alone is not enough. Training, play with a toy and problem solving count as much as running.

Do Malinois get along with other dogs?

It varies by dog. Some live well with other dogs, and some do best as the only dog. Introductions should be slow and supervised, and a meeting with your current dog is part of choosing the right one.

Is a Malinois a good first dog?

For most people, no. Malinois reward experience. If you have never trained a high drive dog, consider a calmer breed, or work with a trainer from day one.
